The Tissue Engineering Department of the School of Advanced Technologies in Medicine at Tehran University of Medical Sciences started its work in 2009. The department began accepting students for the first time in 2009, enrolling doctoral students in the field of Tissue Engineering. Since then, a group of students has been admitted to the PhD program in this field every year.

Tissue Engineering is a multidisciplinary field of study that aims to apply the principles of engineering and biological sciences, firstly to gain a deep understanding of the relationship between the structure and function of mammalian tissues under various conditions of health and disease, and secondly, to develop biological alternatives with the goal of regenerating, repairing, and maintaining or enhancing tissue function.

Tissue Engineering is an interdisciplinary field where graduates, in addition to becoming familiar with the structure of tissues, living cells, and biomaterials, are capable of conducting educational and research activities in the domain of creating living substitutes for tissues and organs using living cells and biomaterials.
